Frequently Asked Questions

To help you get a better understanding of what happening during an Acorn Play Session we go through the sequence of activities in our April 2025 Blog.

What age group are Acorn Play sessions suitable for?

Aged 18MO + or confidently walking up to five. Sessions in the holidays are suitable for all Primary aged children, and Adventure Plus is 5+

Do I need to book in advance, or can we drop in on the day?

No drops ins due to the nature of being in a woodland and advance preparation required (risk assessments, safety sweeps and health and medical needs of participants)

What should my child wear and bring to a session?

We go ahead in all weathers, except extreme rain, snow, wind, hail and thunderstorms! Layers are recommended for cooler weather, including hats, gloves and insulated wellingtons or sturdy shoes. Long sleeves must be worn in hot weather to protect from the sunlight, brambles and leeches. Sun hats and sunscreen are also essential for hot weather. Closed-toe shoes must be worn.

Packing essentials: a water bottle, wipes, a change of clothes (especially socks as they may get wet), additional nut-free snacks and any important medicines for adult or child

What happens in bad weather? Do you cancel sessions?

An email will usually be sent 24 hours in advance, but sessions may be cancelled up to an hour before if the weather is deemed extreme.  Bookings can be transferred or partly refunded (50%)

Are younger siblings or additional adults allowed to attend?

Babies under 12 months are free of charge, as well as adults. Everyone will need a ticket and their details must be accurate and up-to-date.

Is there parking available at Lineover Wood?

Yes, but please be mindful of parking, especially during peak times or during school holidays. If the car park is full, you may park on the left-hand side of the drive leading up to the car park.

Do you accommodate children with additional needs?

Absolutely! Please let us know in advance and we can plan accordingly to ensure every child feels confident during an Acorn Play session

Is there a toilet or baby-changing facility on-site?

No, but wild toileting is encouraged if needed, and we ensure privacy, dignity and follow our safeguarding policy at all times. Dunkertons is close-by if required, and we have wipes and nappy sacks to hand.

Can we bring our own snacks, or is food provided?

A snack is provided during the term-time sessions, usually cooked or toasted on the community campfire. Feel free to bring your own nut-free snacks and ensure that all rubbish is removed from the site before leaving.

How do Acorn Play sessions support child development and learning?

Our aim is to get more young children connecting with and developing a deep love for nature, in an environment that helps them to learn through adventure and play. We mirror the Forest School ethos and its Scandinavian roots, while weaving elements of the Early Years Curriculum into open-ended activities and themes.

Our holistic approach invites children to freely follow their curiosities alongside others, make new discoveries using natural resources, and learn simple bush-craft that builds confidence and self-esteem. The beautiful red cedar trees at base camp offer a sheltered space for our community to come together.
